Licenciada por la Universidad Washington de San Luis y fue becaria del Fondo Nacional para las Humanidades en el Programa de posgrado de Historia del arte y museología de la Universidad de Minnesota. De 1978 a 1986 fue Coordinadora de Museos y Artes Visuales en el Consejo de las Artes de Vermont, ciudad en la que actualmente reside. Durante los últimos 35 años ha trabajado como consultora para organizaciones culturales, organismos públicos y artistas de EE. UU. Meg Ostrum ha editado diversas publicaciones documentales y antologías de historia oral y es autora de El cirujano y el pastor. En la actualidad es miembro del Consejo de Humanidades de Harpo Fundation de Vermont, donde es subdirectora de programas y trabaja cotidianamente. Su curriculum laboral también incluye haber formado parte de los consejos del Museo Marítimo del Lago Champlain, el Green Mountain Film Festival y otras organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro.
